The main species of carp we see in Ireland today include the common, mirror and leather carp, these are all carp that come from the king carp variety and are found in numbers of lakes to varying size throughout the country.
The common carp, contrary to its name, is not very common but a more pretty fish you'll find it hard to capture these fish are a fully scaled fish with a tight scaling pattern and hard fighting to boot.
The mirror and leather varieties are more "common" in Ireland and once again are a hard fighting fish which probably gives them the attraction to anglers.
Carp are not indigenous to Ireland and their origins here appear to stem from British landlords who owned estate in Ireland at one time and brought the fish here for food purposes.
Today carp are a protected species in Ireland with a number commercial venues open in the country specifically stocked with carp and no other fish.
